Comparitech

Comparitech's speed test is a speed test which automatically detects your IP address and your internet service provider. Besides that it automatically selects a test server.

This speed test starts with connecting, a download test, followed by an upload test. When the download test is finished, the ping time besides the download speed is shown.

When the test is finished the download speed varies often a little from the earlier given download speed. For this test the first download speed given will be used.

Free to use

Comparitech is free, there are no ads so the speed test earns 1 point.

Easy to use

Comparitech's speed test didn't pass the WCAG 2.0 Level A test.

The speed test could be started with 1 click, so 1 point is earned. Note that the website uses cookies, there is small banner which informs the user regarding the cookies. It isn't necessary to accept these cookies (or close the banner) to start the test.

Accuracy and consistency

Tested with a clean version of Chromium, throtteld at 30Mbps (30720 kbps) the following measurements are done.

Test Server: Amsterdam, The Netherlands (2)

  1. 34.10Mbps (21 seconds)
  2. 33.99Mbps (21 seconds)
  3. 33.99Mbps (21 seconds)
  4. 33.99Mbps (21 seconds)
  5. 33.99Mbps (21 seconds)

Tested with a clean version of Firefox, throtteld at 30Mbps (Wi-Fi) the following measurements are done.

Test Server: Amsterdam, The Netherlands (2)

  1. 33.98Mbps (21 seconds)
  2. 33.93Mbps (21 seconds)
  3. 33.87Mbps (21 seconds)
  4. 33.88Mbps (21 seconds)
  5. 33.86Mbps (21 seconds)

That gives an average of 34.0Mbps and a standard deviation of 0.07Mbps for the downloadspeed. The average and standard deviation for the time required are respectively 21 seconds and 0 seconds.

Note that based on the Chromium measurements the average download speed is 34.0Mbps with a standard deviation of 0.05Mbps. While the Firefox measurements gives an average download speed of 33.9Mbps with a standard deviation of 0.05Mbps.

Based on the measurements noted above you might conclude that the throttling speed of Firefox compared to the throttling speed of Chromium is not significant different.
