Accuracy and consistency

Tested with a clean version of Chromium, throtteld at 30Mbps (30720 kbps) the following measurements are done.

Test Server: i3D.net - Rotterdam

  1. 31.50Mbps (20 seconds)
  2. 31.50Mbps (23 seconds)
  3. 31.52Mbps (20 seconds)
  4. 31.50Mbps (21 seconds)
  5. 31.49Mbps (21 seconds)

That gives an average of 31.5Mbps and a standard deviation of Mbps 0.01 for the downloadspeed. The average and standard deviation for the time required are respectively 21 seconds and 1 second.

With a server manually selected at the other side of the world (Test Server: Exetel - Sydney), the results are:

  1. 31.49Mbps (26 seconds)
  2. 31.55Mbps (26 seconds)
  3. 31.49Mbps (25 seconds)
  4. 31.50Mbps (25 seconds)
  5. 31.45Mbps (25 seconds)

That gives an average of 31.5Mbps and a standard deviation of 0.04Mbps for the downloadspeed. That isn't slower. The only difference is that the test takes a few seconds more.

Tested with a clean version of Firefox, throtteld at 30Mbps (Wi-Fi) something strange happens. It becomes clear that the Ookla Speed test ignores the throtteld speed. The downloadspeed measuered is roughly 46Mbps.

It is clear that Ookla Speedtest doesn't work fine with a throtteld Firefox browser.

A test in the wild

Tested with Firefox the following measurements are done.

Test Server: Korton Group BV - Hoofddorp

  1. 49.63Mbps (26 seconds)
  2. 49.60Mbps (25 seconds)
  3. 50.37Mbps (26 seconds)
  4. 50.12Mbps (25 seconds)
  5. 49.79Mbps (26 seconds)

That gives an average of 49.9Mbps and a standard deviation of 0.33Mbps for the downloadspeed.
