Speed tests for average internet users

There are lots of speed tests with average internet users in mind.

All these speed tests try to strike a balance between speed and accuracy. The rule of thumb is that the longer the test lasts, the more accurate the test is.

I want to know my internet speed as fast as possible

You want to know your internet speed as fast as possible

ZOMDir's Internet Speed at a Glance gives you as fast as possible a rough indication of your internet speed.

Unlike other speed tests, the measured download speed is always indicated with a lower and upper limit. This prevents false accuracy.

Internet Speed at a Glance is therefore extremely suitable for quickly finding out whether there are problems with your internet connection.

I want an accurate speed test

This is the best accurate speed test

If you want an accurate speed test, your best choice is M-Lab. M-Lab is the only speed test that appears in the top 3 of most accurate speed tests for every speed tested.

I am an expert who understands how the internet works

Speed tests for the expert who understands how the internet works

You know the rule of thumb that the longer a speed test takes, the better the results are and the more insight you get into your internet connection.

Most of the recommended speed tests take a relatively long time. As a result, these tests are not climate-friendly, but they do provide clarifying results.

What do you want to know in particular?

I want to know the max bandwidth

Measure your max bandwidth with True Speed at a Glance

When you want to know the max bandwidth, you should use True Speed at a Glance

For higher speeds you should set the "Max time to complete" to 12 seconds.

I want to know as much details as possible

The Cloudflare Speed test provides a lot of details

When you want to know as much details as possible you should use Cloudflare's Speed test.

Cloudflare gives a lot of information, has a nice interface and is extremely transparent about the method by which the download speed is determined.

Cloudflare has clear graphs that indicate that the larger the download, the more accurate the measurement.

The only drawback of this speed test is the time it takes to complete the test.

I suspect my home network is the bottleneck

Check if your home network is the bottleneck

More often than most people expect, your home network (your router, your Wi-Fi) determines the maximum download speed.

With a speed test you measure the smallest throughput of all systems between your device and the test server. This smallest throughput determines your internet download speed.

When you suspect that your home network is the bottleneck, you should use RealSpeed.

RealSpeed measures both your router's internet speed and your device's internet speed. If the second is lower, there is a good chance that your home network is throwing a spanner in the works.

I have a discussion with my internet service provider

Complaints about your ISP? Use their speed test

If you have complaints about your internet speed, it is best to:

  1. check whether the home network you are using can handle the bandwidth to be measured
  2. use the speed test of your internet service provider (your ISP)
  3. test with a wired network to rule out Wi-Fi issues
  4. test on an updated system as a sole user

By performing a speed test in the above manner, you avoid unnecessary discussions with your internet provider.

If your internet service provider don't offer a speed test, then and only then, use Ookla's speedtest.net. Many ISPs consider Ookla speedtest the gold standard for internet speed testing, although there are better speed tests.

I have problems watching Netflix

Issues with Netflix? Use the Fast speed test

With the Fast speed test Netflix has created a selfservice tool for their users.

It is a smart tool to reduce the number of calls to the Netflix helpdesk.

This is because, in contrast with other speed tests, the Fast speed test is always connecting to a Netflix server. Hence you measure with Fast the max throughput from Netflix to your home network.

For video streaming you need a download speed of 5 Mbps. Fast is a conservative speed test, so when Fast states that your download speed is 5 Mbps or more you should be fine.

When your internet speed is lower than 5 Mbps, you should check your internet speed with another conservative speed test like Bandwidth Place or Meter.net.

When these speed test gives you a download speed of 5 Mbps or more you know that your internet connection isn't the problem. There is a good chance that the bottleneck is at Netflix.
