In general, the Broadband Genie speed test is not a recommended speed test, mainly because this speed test measures too low a speed. Fortunately, there are more accurate speed tests.

The Broadband Genie speed test is a conservative speed test. That is, this speed test measures structural an internet speed lower than the advertised speed.
Broadband Genie
Broadband Genie is an independent UK comparison service for broadband services. Broadband Genie acquired Broadband.co.uk, in 2021. The sites were merged in 2024. Nowadays broadbandgenie.co.uk redirects to www.broadband.co.uk.
Broadband Genie has been offering a speed test since March 2010. The very first speed test they offered was a Java based speed test.
Broadband.co.uk has been offering a speed test since March 2009. The very first speed test the offered was a clone of Broadband Speed Checker®.
The current Broadband Genie speed test seems to be an original speed test.
The Broadband Genie speed test is owned by Genie Ventures LTD.
Pros
This Broadband Genie speed test has the following pros:
- The speed test is very data efficient
- There is a clear indication how much time is required for a test
Less than 16 seconds to go
When we run this speed test each step clearly indicates how long the step will take at most.
Cons
This Broadband Genie speed test has the following cons:
- This speed test measures too low a speed
- The Start Test button is below the fold
- When the speed is completed, the results are analyzed for an eternity
- We had to reload the page for a retest
The Start Test button is below the fold
It is absolutely not user-friendly that you first have to scroll down before the speed test can start. As far as we are concerned, the Start Test button should be directly -so without scrolling- clearly visible.
Waiting for an eternity
After finishing the test it keeps saying that the results are being analyzed. The screen below remained for more than 10 minutes (after which we decided not to wait any longer).
When to use Broadband Genie
If you are testing your internet speed from the UK, this speed test can in theory be useful as your results will -in theory- be compared to those of other providers in the UK.
If you just want to know your internet speed, you're better off using a different speed test.
How we tested
We tried to test the Broadband Genie speed test in a standardized way. This makes speed tests easy to compare.
We had to deviate from the original default test because it was not possible to restart the speed test (probably due to the permanent analysis). So after the results were displayed, we reloaded the page and restarted the test.
The following results form the basis for this speed test review:
- Abort/pause possible: no
