On the page How Google Fiber has Elevated Connectivity using Speedtest® Data the following quote from Liz Hsu (Senior Director of Product, Google Fiber) is used:

By leveraging Ookla's data, we can understand the speeds our customers are actually experiencing in their own homes, with their unique setups and combination of end-user devices. This helps us deliver the high-speed internet we promise and continue to set the standard for network performance.

It appears that Ookla provides more useful information for an ISP than the original Google Fiber speed test.

Our recommendation

However, we want to know which speed test is better for the consumer. Based on what we know about speed tests, if we had to choose between these two speed tests, we would choose Google Fiber (original) over Google Fiber Speedtest (by Ookla). The deciding factor is the data efficiency and speed of Google Fiber (original).
