Despite the warning that "You are not on the Google Fiber network. Running a speed test on your mobile network may result in data charges" the Google Fiber speed test is data efficient.

Our recommendation

Based on what we know about speed tests, if we had to choose between these two speed tests, we would choose Google Fiber over M-Lab. The decisive factors are the high scores that Google Fiber achieves in the areas of accuracy, data efficiency, speed, privacy-friendliness and usability.
