The Xfinity speed test

https://speedtest.xfinity.com/ The Xfinity speed test 0 4/5 stars ★★★★☆ Hans van der Graaf

In general, the Xfinity speed test is not a recommended speed test due to the large standard deviation and the sometimes unrealistic high measurements.

With an adverstised speed of 100 Mbps and an average measured internet speed of 102 Mbps, we conclude that the Xfinity speed test is an accurate speed test (Accuracy score: 97/100).

Xfinity is an ambiguous speed test. In other words, the results are often between values expected by mainstream speed tests and realistic speed tests.

Unreliable results

With an advertised speed of 100 Mbps, the Xfinity speed test measured speeds between 84.7 and 128.8 Mbps. The deviations from the expected internet speed are that large that these results are unreliable. Besides that, the measurement of 128.8 Mbps is 15% above the true internet speed (in this case 112 Mbps) which is unrealistic high.

The result page of the Xfinity speed test gives a speed of 84.7 Mbps, while the advertised speed is 100 Mbps

The result page of the Xfinity speed test gives a speed of 128.8 Mbps, while the advertised speed is 100 Mbps

The Xfinity speed test is owned by Comcast Corporation. The first occurence on the Wayback Machine is from February 2016.

Xfinity was the number 2 speed test in the first speed test test of 2020. Due to the fact that Xfinity is an ambiguous speed test, it wasn't tested that often.

The Xfinity speed test is an original speed test.

Pros

This Xfinity speed test has the following pros:

  1. The speed test is ad free
  2. Nice running indicators are used (which gives an indication of your download speed)

Nice running / speed indicators

When you run the Xfinity speed test, with different aircraft, from slow (a hot air balloon) to fast (a rocket) it is indicated that:

  1. The speed test is still in progress
  2. The order of magnitude of your download speed so far

The aircraft are: a hot air balloon, a propeller plane, a jet plane and a rocket

Cons

This Xfinity speed test has the following cons:

  1. It has a large standard deviation

When to use Xfinity

If you just want to know what your internet speed is, then use another speed test. Read our advice for a better speed test that suits your needs.

If you want to ask Xfinity what to do to get the advertised speed you have to test properly.

Preferably you use this speed test and perform this test on several days.

Keep in mind that your home network is usually the bottleneck.

How we tested

We have tested the Xfinity speed test in a standardized way. This makes speed tests easy to compare.
